Caltrans Commemorates Early Workers Memorial Day
"Working on the California highway system should not be a life or death situation."The California Department of Transportation, Caltrans, has a 60-foot-wide diamond made up of 160 cones representing each worker killed on the state's roads and highways in the past 80 years. After going three years without a single fatality, two cones have been added since the end of February.
Mike Feliciano, a 55-year-old Salinas man, was struck and killed by a motorist as he drove home Feb. 25.
Then Wednesday, as Caltrans was preparing for its annual memorial service in front of the state Capitol, William Calloway fell to his death. The 50-year-old Benicia man was a structural steel painter for Caltrans.
